Istanbul Airport is the biggest airport in the world and the most significant global transfer hub in the region. We have the distinct specialty of being a vast ecosystem with all of our business partners including all our passengers, employees, service providers, other airlines, ground servicing firms, cargo managers, and domestic and international aviation authorities.
With all of our features, we, at iGA, are a well-planned, applied, sustainable and visionary corporation of Turkey that uses technology successfully in every field. We are aware that the use of technology is crucial in today's world in order to increase one's standing amongst the global competition. In order to enable this, we know that innovative and cutting-edge technologies, as well as the start-ups to develop these technologies, are extremely important.
Istanbul Airport, where construction was completed in a record time of just 42 months, is the world's largest airport with an annual capacity of 90 million passengers. Renowned for being the biggest global transfer hub in the region, our operations continue to run smoothly while we receive awards from respected institutions in the aviation industry for our strong infrastructure, efficient operation, superior technology, and outstanding travel experience.
Istanbul Airport became the first airport in the world to receive the "Airport Health Accreditation" certificate issued by the Airport Council International (ACI). Furthermore, we qualified for the "Airport Pandemic Certification" awarded by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. After signing the "COVID-19 Aviation Health Safety Protocol," published by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), we registered the safety measures that we have taken as shown by an international certificate. With today’s ever-changing and developing technologies, the digital travel experience has become one of the biggest demands from our passengers and is a concept that has become more important with the effects of working through pandemic conditions. We have taken important steps in the field of digital integration by strengthening this concept, which has been the focus of our operations since day one, through the smart solutions and practices that we provide. As a smart, sustainable, and people-oriented airport, our practices were seen to be deserving of the "Digital Transformation Award" presented at the "16th ACI Europe Awards" and organized by the Airports Council International (ACI). This award has proven that we have been on the right track in reaching our digitalization goal, yet another focus of our operations.
Even during the reporting period, we have continued our efforts to certify our processes, which were designed in accordance with our environmental and sustainability policies, and which highlight our environment-oriented approach. Within this context, ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gas Management System Installations were completed and we have received the relevant certificates. In line with our efforts to fight against climate change, we successfully fulfilled the requirements of ACI's Airport Carbon Accreditation program and received their "First Level Carbon Emission Certificate". This means that we are now listed as one of the Airport Council International's "climate-smart airports." In addition, our terminal building was designed to meet the requirements for LEED certification and was subsequently nominated for the LEED Gold certification in May 2020. Istanbul Airport has, therefore, been officially registered as the world's largest LEED-certified building. All these achievements are a direct result of our projects and activities and have motivated us to work harder in line with our goal of creating a clean, developed Turkey with the lives of future generations in mind.
Having developed special products and services exclusively for our Chinese guests, we became the world's first terminal building to have fully implemented the "China Friendly Airport" project. In addition, and within the scope of our collaboration with airports in Pakistan, we have introduced various "passenger-friendly" applications in order to make every moment at the airport more comfortable and enjoyable for our Pakistani guests.
To this end, Istanbul Airport (iGA) and İTÜ ARI Teknokent are determined to combine forces in the iGA HUB program to support entrepreneurs. Our goal is to ensure that innovative ideas and technological initiatives in the field of Civil Aviation and Airport Management are brought to life and supported accordingly. In doing so, we aim to contribute to civil aviation in both Turkey and across the world in our journey to becoming a global brand. We also want projects that are developed at Istanbul Airport to be able to benefit other sectors as well as the aviation industry.
